Dressing My Words Like a Modern Poet

Dressing My Words Like a Modern Poet

One after another, the rejections arrive.

Some are nice and let me know that

my writing was good,

but it just wasn’t for us, they say.

Still, it hurts. So, I begin to

dress my words up like other poets’.

A collection of prose that

have line breaks in the strangest

places.

And instead of using one of the

hundreds of different traditional styles of

poetry I studied, many of which rhyme,

I had to ensure my poetry avoided that,

each and every time, yes.

The more I do this, the better the

responses I get from my submissions.

And finally, I can see that ever-elusive green,

the accepted badge comes toward me,

now that I have left my rhymes behind

and dressed my words like a modern poet.
