Tales of the Bus Driver: Embedding With the 999th

“Busting Ass”

One of the conditions of me getting access to embed with these units was that I drive the buses that transport them around in the Green Zone, shuttling young combat waifs around in their off-time. I was a school bus driver back in the old days, and when the Agrarians’ chief of personnel overheard me talking about it, she demanded that I “pull my weight.” At first, I didn’t think she was serious. She was. Interwebs journalist/bus driver. That’s my shit.

During one of the rare instances when I wasn’t driving, I had time to lightbrite this picture of a labor crew pulling a jeep out of a ditch back onto the [not so] golden streets of Heaven’s “Eden biodome”. The unit trained in Eden for several weeks. This made no sense to me (training in plush woodlands for combat in a mostly urban theater), but I’m not a military man. I’m certainly not going to pretend to understand the agrafascist mindset, one that says that 25-40 child soldiers under the command of two adult officers is a working strategy for promoting unit cohesion.

“Unit cohesion.” Am I even using that word correctly? I think I learned it from a brief session of Advanced Squad Leader that I played in the Worldbuilder’s Lounge.
