Doll, Dole, Dollar

Doll, Dole1, Dollar

….I was a cucumber … was a grape … was a pickle … OK, then … a pickle but only after I went through both the pickling brine and the pickling machine …..

I pose this Question: was the curved wooden rocking piece, that is to say … the curved wooden piece of the rocking chair, that touches the floor when grandmother is rocking, is that wooden piece our witness here today?

I was then a roma tomato, two for a dollar, but then as my father and grandfather beat me I became ketchup, two for a dollar,

…then my two sisters tried once to tell me something that I did not understand and they later told me it was two for considerably more than one dollar.

If I say something that is untrue, is that true? is that fiction?

Or is that a lie?

Or is that me getting back at a “dole” grandfather and a father who was “dolar” [long o ]

… No wait something’s not right here, a word that I am using is not the correct word. … I meant and wanted to … use a word that starts with the letter d, a word that means solemn or “down-face” and that word starts with a ‘d’ – and sounds something like dole – I mean phonetically it sounds something like dole.

Did there not used to be such a word?

The word ‘highfalutin’2 is actually a real word, … who knew ?

Trust me, something is terribly wrong with this poem; it is not just that the writing could be better, but the piece is too obvious, not subtle enough … this poem wastes its potential by being too blatant and scolding and out in the open.

…. and by God the men who thought quite a lot of themselves, bought my sisters, two for more than a one hundred dollars3 … In the barn… on a day … that could not bring itself to be hot, nor spring-like, nor even a day. … Our pony was named Lightning.

Some Things that happen in life are most unusually cruel; but the cruel things are not always what we think they are. … …

If you do not believe me, please ask Robert Creeley’s poem “The Warning”4 from his book of poems entitled For Love …

… which I am not allowed to quote here in its entirety, and I wish that I could. …

Part Three

Nor am I am, … while I hear screaming from the barn; the screaming is extremely short lived. If I try I can, … cannot, … can, … cannot, … – yes I can convince myself that no sounds are upon us.

Years later I was raped, but “thankfully” only once and only on one day, only once … and then I was murdered in a smelly flea bag. It is difficult to get one’s grip in a fleabag; since the inside surface is

Vile, smelly, and curved – let us not forget the fact that the inside surface is just plain curved and not flat. Slick – like a trash bag is for a bed bug. …. You cannot get your grip.

One of my sister’s is railing against this poem … she is protesting … I mean now in this year, 2017, and she says over the phone: “be sure, you degenerate,” she says, “Be sure you tell them that none of this ever happened.”

“OK,” Sis, “I will. I will try to do that – no really I really will do that.

While I was on the phone with my sister,
Our pony, Lightning, was out in the field, grazing…

As I gripped the phone more tightly to put it back on its cradle, the phone became a pancake.
